A busy five months for Westmorland

The Westmorland Club in Cumbria’s Northern Centre have a busy few months ahead with five trials, two scrambles and a road run all in the offing for sporting enthusiasts in the North West.

All the action starts with the club’s Lonsdale Trial on January 23 which has attracted a massive 122 strong entry (entries now closed) starting from the club’s own land at Firbank Fell.

Then just six weeks later on March 6 it’s the Milnthorpe Cup Trial which will be round 3 of the ACU’s S3 Trials Championship which is sure to enjoy a massive entry for the event based around Bowland Bridge in the South Lakes. Entries for that event open at 8am on Monday, January 24 and will close a week before the trial to allow for programme production.

Then there are two club trials on April 10 and May 15 but it’s on May 29 that is the big one for the club when Westmorland host round 3 of the ACU Trial GB British Championship which breaks new ground due to fallen timber at last year’s venue.

Thanks to the enthusiastic Barrow Club and the Lakes Two Day organisers, the trial will be held at Haveriggholme near Torver, LA21 8BU and whilst this area will be familiar with riders who have enjoyed the Lakes Two Day in the past, the Trial GB event will be very different and will start from a new venue, a large flat field that offers much improved parking for the paddock.

But it’s not only trials in which Westmorland have a vested interest as on the weekend of April 23/24 they will be running a two day classic scramble on the Westmorland County Showground land which will include a round of the Greeves Championship promoted by Dave Harper. Greeves still have a strong following on the classic scene and they will be able to enjoy two race days along with the rest of the classic men.

Also on the cards that week will be one of Peter Remington’s road runs on Thursday April 21 from the Heves Hotel grounds at Levens taking in a roundabout route to finish at Coniston.

And finally in a a very busy five months for the club there are plans for another classic scramble on May 22 at a brand new venue which as yet can’t be confirmed but looks to be a fine addition to the club’s potential scramble venues.

A busy time for a busy club.
