Beta boys claim Roughten honours

Roughten Gill, near Caldbeck is a classic Lakeland trials venue thanks to the generosity of the landowners and the Lake District planning board where Cumberland County MCC have organised trials for several decades.

It’s a long, narrow valley with a virtual dead end at former lead mines and provides excellent rocky stream sections of varying severity, and for last Sunday’s Velocette Trial, attracted  39 riders, but clashed with the thiurd day of the Reeth Three Day Trial which probably reduced the number of potential riders.

Beta  riders Richard Neaves and Nick Shield had a day long battle, losing just 3 and 4 marks respectively with Mark Quinn a further mark behind.

Two routes were used through the sections with Cliff Metcalfe the winner on the easy clubman course from Hugh Beasley, losing  14 and 21 respectively.
