If a trial happened to be near flowing water on New Year’s Day, 2025 , at just about anywhere in the UK, then there would have been a good chance the event would have be cancelled or postponed, for the New Year’s Eve day and night saw some of the heaviest rainfall for a long time.
However, Cumberland County MCC’s event was held in a sandy and rock strewn quarry at Nord Vue, Armathwaite, previously used for World Championship events, and though there were a good many large puddles at the venue, flowing water is non-exisistent, so the trial took place without question.
Being an enter in advance event, 54 riders had signed up to take part but on the day some 18 failed to attend, meaning their entry fees became donations to the club. Held over two courses, a standard clubman route and an easy clubman route, it was Ross McCulloch (pictured at a CCMCC trial when the sun was shining) on a Vertigo who won the main route with the loss of 11 marks with Callum Cook and Trevor Fawkes in second and third, but both on the same number of marks and separated by the most cleans tie-breaker.
Paul Norman on his Bantam was the easy winner of the easier route and only lost six marks to head home Paul Corbishley and Ossy Byers. Of the five retirements from the event, Nick Shield would likely have been a potential winner, but reported back with the comment ” Sorry I didn’t finish, but an unscheduled dismount in section 4 ( much to Jaspers amusement!) must have nipped the front tube, at which point it went in the van while I decided which bit to rub first.”
