Kicking off the 2023 season was the Cumberland County MCC with their New Year’s Day Trial at Blaze Fell, High Hesket which attracted a fine entry of 58 riders.

The harder clubman course was dominated by two riders who went clean round the four laps of 12 sections, Jamie Bingley and Steve Stamper – who was celebrating his successful inclusion in the forthcoming Scottish Six Days along with other local pals who have been successful  including Drew Morten and Richard Fisher.

The venue, previously used for several World Trials Championship rounds, remains a unique venue in that all sections were pointy rocks embedded in grass, heather and bracken, but the recent heavy rain which was also a feature for much of the day made them very slippery as the trial progressed.

Whilst most of the riders chose to ride the standard clubman route, a significant number rode the easier clubman course over which Paul Westgarth was the best losing just a single mark which was a decent ride. Leana Titley (featured image) should be pleased with her performance as the veterinary nurse, in finishing 9th had a great result over  numerous men in an enjoyable event that heralded the start of another busy year of Northern Centre trials.
