Nick’s one dab win.
There has not been a Northern Centre trial suitable for the riders who can’t or don’t want to ride a tough national event since the end of September, so the Cumberland County club’s Dixie Dee trial at Brownrigg Fell on October 20 attracted an excellent entry – all on-line – of 52 riders. But well forecasted bad weather meant that 11 chose to be listed as non-starters and a further 11 failed to finish the event which left 30 riders listed in the results.
Riding the adult clubman route, Nick Shield lost just a single mark to be the overall winner on his Beta from Ross McCulloch on six and Mark Quinn on seven.
Back riding a new Beta some weeks ago after a venture to another make of bike, Shield reported that it was like “wearing an old pair of slippers”, meaning that the Beta model suits his style better than anything else he has ridden, which has proven to be correct with success most times he has been on the Italian steed.
Brownrigg Fell is predominately flat with most of the sections rocks in grass and ferns and after the torrential rain the days before was very wet and muddy, so Shield’s low winning score was most impressive.
Over the Adult Easy Route Graham Knight lost 21 to be the winner from Steve Roscamp on the same score and then Hugh Beesley who was more than double the loss of the first two winners.
