Passing of Maurice Newsham

Passing of Maurice Newsham

We are sad to report the passing of well-known Lancashire trials rider Maurice Newsham who was for many years one of the top expert trials riders in the North West of England, riding regularly in both Lancashire and  Westmorland as well as in Yorkshire.

Maurice, who was 84, passed away over the weekend at his home in Carnforth, after suffering general infirmity for some years.

Whilst it is now many years since he rode a trial, he did continue riding green lanes for a good many years, with several of his past trialing companions including his great friend Stan Cordingley.

Maurice rode in the Scottish Six Days and also the Scott Trial many times and even took part in the ISDT when it was held in the Isle of Man. Maurice was also heavily involved in kart racing, especially in the days when there was a kart circuit at nearby Heysham. As well as being a talented engineer, specialising in model making, he worked for Lancashire County Council with responsibility for equipping offices.

In the early ‘seventies he opened up a DIY shop in Carnforth which still exists and is now one of the longest established business in the town together with his friend Keith Quinn’s cycle shop, Dynostart.
