Clean sheet by Andrew at High Newton
The third and final trial in the Westmorland Club’s series of Wednesday evening events attracted a decent entry of 39 riders to High Newton on August 13 where the riders found a collection of ten easy sections over the bone dry rockery that features at this hilltop venue.
After four laps, only one rider had managed to tackle the 40 sections without losing a mark, that rider being Andrew Scott who has been a regular supporter of Westmorland’s events for many years. Trials riders will know full well that going clean in any trial, no matter how easy the sections are, takes some mastering as Peter Clibburn found out when he took a quick dab on Harold Whiteway’s section, a series of gentle turns and gentle drops that needed careful riding on the bone dry but so slippery grass.
In addition to the standard, if easy clubman course, there was an even easier version available for the nine riders who preferred an easier evening, with Graham Knight from the northern reaches of Cumbria campaigning his 156 Fantic to a class win for the loss of two marks, some six ahead of Craig Asbridge, also from the same area of Cumbria.
With no rider losing more than 35 marks through the sections and only one rider on a clean sheet, the level of severity was absolutely right for an evening trial that brought the three round series to a conclusion as the nights draw in as the season heads towards autumn.
