Success all round at Diane’s trial

Success all round at Diane’s trial

Eric Kitchen’s pictures are now in the Gallery.

There are two essentials when organising a charity trial, 1) that you attract an entry as large as possible (more riders, more entry fees, more money for the raffle); and 2) that the trial is easy so that riders go home, happy without any moans, because easy trials don’t generate moans, whereas tough trials can do the exact opposite.

So Bank Holiday Monday’s Diane Shield Memorial Trial by the Barrow club at Tow Tops above High Newton fulfilled both criteria. The club had 84 riders turn up to ride, an almost unheard of number these days and the trial saw seven riders go clean over the main clubman course while the winning scores on the easy clubman course were as low as two marks lost.

However, having six clean sheets doesn’t make the trial too easy, for the riders who managed to ride without losing marks through the four laps of 12 sections on the hill top venue overlooking Morecambe Bay, were all quality experts, in no particular order being Ross Bainbridge, Nick Shield, Robin Luscombe, Chris Dixon, Will Brockbank, Scott Mayhew and Matt Edmondson.

The easier course riders who topped the list were Peter Clibburn and Paul Norman with Mike Roberts and Angus Jenkinson close behind. Several riders taking part were giving final outings to their classic machines prior to the upcoming Classic Manx Two Day.

But the day was not about results, but about remembering a lady who who was very much a driving force in the organisation of the sport for well over 25 years, and the success of the day for her favourite charity “Make-a-Wish Foundation”, will certainly benefit from the amount raised which is likely to exceed £2k.

The Barrow Club particularly wish to thank all those riders who supported the trial, to the healthy contingent of observers and particularly to the landowners, to the Bingley family  and to Robert Moorhouse who together with Nick Shield set out a great trial on a glorious day in South Lakeland. There will soon be an extended video of the event on You Tube channel, 2wheels off-road. Eric Kitchen’s picture selection will be in the gallery soon and full results are on the Results page of this site.
