Great support for the Diane Shield charity trial
The third running of the Diane Shield Charity Trial, run to raise funds for the Make a Wish charity, attracted the largest entry yet with 80 riders travelling to Tow Tops above High Newton for a trial on the high lands above Morecambe Bay over 4 laps of ten sections.
Superbly organised by Nick Shield, Andrew Bingley and his family and others connected with the promoting Barrow Club, not only was the trial spot on for the entry but there was also a raffle with a huge number of prizes together with a packed lunch for the observers and a Cartmell Sticky Toffee Pudding to relish back at home.

There were just two courses, a tricky but very sensible clubman course over the predominately rock outcrops in long grass sections but also a easy clubman course – both were well supported with Stephen Dixon winning the main clubman course on his 175cc Yamaha Whitehawk losing just 4 marks whilst on the easy clubman course, David Postlethwaite, (lead picture) a rider who enters a trial barely once a year, went clean on his 185 Drayton Bantam.
In total comparison to 12 months earlier when the ground was bone dry and the temperature decidedly warm, this year the land was soaking after many days of torrential rain in the Lake District and temperatures that demanded winter coats.
The support for this event was most impressive with more than enough observers, indeed there could have been another five sections and with entries taken on the day, the weather forecast – dry and windy for a change, encouraged a good turnout of family supporters. All told it was a great trial, well supported and for a really good cause for a charity that was close to the late Diane Shield’s heart.
Nick Shield and Owen Gilchrist shared the second spot on the main course, with Peter Clibburn and Paul Norman sharing the runner up spot over the easy course. Numerous riders turned out for this event who do not ride regularly, which made the support for the event so impressive and the Shield and Bingley families and the Barrow club members offer their thanks for the great support.
