Combine a Bank Holiday Monday with a beautiful Spring day in the Lake District and you have the formula for a perfect motorcycle trial – and that’s what the Lakes Grasstrack Racing Club provided on the final Monday of May at Redscar when they promoted their GS Motorcycles sponsored round on the hilly course near Crook.

Having plotted 12 sections, and gathered enough observers for them all to be marshalled, three laps was the offering to the 63 strong entry in this Northern Centre Championship round where James Postlethwaite proved to be the hard course victor by a four mark margin over Steve Dixon. Tom Swindlehurst was third, Wilf Shuttleworth fourth and Owen Gilchrist fifth, the last three having given their all the previous day in the tough fourth round of the Trial GB series at Inch Perfect.

With 27 cleans  Peter Mawson was the top performer over the Green course but it was  a narrow win by just a single clean over Jack Dixon with Joel Hazlett claiming third. Mike Irving rides infrequently these days due to overseas work commitments but still showed that his 315 Montesa is as competitive now as they were when new some 20 years or more ago, whilst Nick Shield, who purchased a brand new, unused 350 CCM back in the winter took the big red BSA engined beast to sixth in the Clubman class that was won by Anthony Hayhurst on ten lost, just one fewer than Simon Brice with Youth B rider Aaron Oliver third.

Club stalwart Colin Benson won the easy course route on his Ariel from Keith Goodwin on his Bantam in a class that attracted a healthy 13 strong entry of both older riders and younger riders who prefer a less taxing day out.
