Heaven at Holmscales

Bitterly cold weather with a biting wind failed to deter the nearly 70 riders who chose to attend the Lakes Grass Track Racing Club’s trial on January 14 at the Holmscales venue near Crooklands  for four laps of the ten sections at this compact old quarry venue. Muddy banks, rocky streams and short rooted climbs featured over three routes for a Hard course, a Clubman course and a  Easy Clubman course, with one rider saying it was heaven to be back out again at a trial.

Ross Bainbridge lost just a single mark to win the Hard course by a margin of six from Owen Gilchrist with local Westmorland rider Harry Towler in third , but some way adrift on 19.

However it was a bit closer in the clubman class as Mark Quinn lost five, three fewer that Butch Rodgers and Montesa mounted Stuart Mowbray in third. The second and third placings had to be decided on the most cleans tie decider with Rodgers getting the advantage by a single clean, both riders having lost eight.

On the Easy course it was Neil Buckley on his 185 BSA Bantam  who finished just a single dab ahead of Tony Johnson and Lakes club stalwart Colin Benson in third, a further mark adrift.

With so many events suffering cancellations due to the extreme wet weather the county has been experiencing these past moths, it was good to get a decent entry of riders out again, and though not all the venue could be used due to potential land damage, enough was available for a good day of trialing.
